Welcome to the intermediate lead essentials course part 2! Over the next 5 lessons, we will be learning cool new techniques, applying them to a really cool rock riff and even learning linking patterns which will allow you to solo all the way across the neck! There is a lot of information to cover in this course, so take your time with each lesson and gradually move through the course, and as always, have fun!
In this lesson, we look at the legato style of playing. This basically means using hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides. These techniques can easily turn a boring scale into something far more exciting! Let's first take a look at how these techniques look on the tab:
To put our new techniques and all 5 pentatonic shapes into practice, we will learn this cool Led Zeppelin inspired riff! As we go through this riff over the next two videos, be sure that you are always trying to visualise the shapes as this is how you will learn to improvise. Watch this whole performance video through and then move on to the next lesson where we will take you through how to play it.
The whole riff is written in the key of B minor. The riff starts all the way up in Pentatonic shape 4 and gradually works its way back to shape 4 and 3, a whole octave down the neck. Make sure that you can pick out the scale shapes as you go through the riff. The shapes used in the song are shown in the fretboard diagrams.
Here is the tab for the entire song. You can now go over all the licks and start to put them together to create the tune. Use the looping and slow-down functions to ensure you have it correct before moving on.
The idea behind linking patterns is to find very musical ways through the 5 pentatonic shapes. These will end up proving very useful as guitar ‘runs’ that you can build up speed with. The exercise actually kicks off in the 5th shape of the pentatonic scale, then to the first, then second and finally finishing at the top of the third. If you struggle to visualise this, take a look at the. fretboard diagrams.
For our second linking pattern, we are using the 3rd, 4th and 5th shapes of the pentatonic. This pattern is a little trickier as it is higher up the neck and harder to visualise the shapes. Take a looks at the fretboard diagrams if you get stuck.
