Welcome to the essentials course part four! In this set of 5 lessons, we will be learning a cool spider exercise to help improve your speed and accuracy on the guitar and we will be learning two challenging licks, then getting them 'under your fingers' so you can improvise with them. We will finally be revisiting the airports idea and recapping everything you should have learnt so far. As always, take your time and have fun!
We have been doing a lot of work with the pentatonic scales, but we need to now prepare our fingers for more intricate scales and solos. These spider exercises really help improve finger independence, and the 1,3,2,4 is a particularly unnatural feeling exercise... which is why it’s perfect!
It’s always great to learn new licks, and today, we will be learning a lick based on pentatonic shapes 1 & 2. In this instance, it’s in the key of C minor, but in the next few lessons we will be transposing these licks, so make sure you can spot the shapes. Take a look at the fretboard diagrams to see which shapes we are using.

We have now done a lot of work with new solos and licks, so our airports idea is going to become even more useful. During this lesson, we will take you through how to apply your new licks using this technique and then how to take it one step further with your five shapes and the linking patterns. It is important that you try these ideas out for yourself, so we have provided a set of backing tracks to ensure you can practise properly.
