We are continuing our epic quest to master this Lukather style solo, and in this section we tackle some extremely quick hybrid picking arpeggios, more dorian sounds as well as the mixolydian pentatonic!
We now set about continuing this epic solo and getting it all together! Lick 5 is probably the most challenging individual lick as it uses some tricky hybrid picking played very fast. It essentially runs through the E Dorian scale shape whilst using hybrid picking. We are using hybrid picking because of the one-note per string sections which can be tricky to play if you just use picking. Following on from this section we run through the pentatonic shape 4 but add some cool chromatic notes as well! The scale shape we are using can be found in the fretboard diagrams.
This lick brings us right back to our pentatonic shape 1, and borrows heavily from one of the licks we looked at in 'Steve's Trick Back'. The hybrid picking is absolutely crucial in this lick, so if Ollie runs through it a bit too quickly please check out his more detailed explanation in the 'Steve's Trick Bag' section. The pentatonic shape we are using can be found in the fretboard diagrams.
The first half of lick 7 is all about 'mini arpeggios'! We are basically running through E minor style arpeggios, using the notes based around the Dorian scale as well, followed by a cool pentatonic riff on one string. The effect of playing the pentatonic on one string gives a cool vocal quality to the sound. Be sure to try and visualise the pentatonic shapes as you run down the notes. The shapes can be found in the fretboard diagrams.
The song now changes into the key of E Mixolydian (A Major), and therefore we can have some fun with our cool Mixolydian pentatonic. This entire lick is based around the shape 1 of the Mixolydian pentatonic apart from the odd note here and there. The shapes we are using can be found in the fretboard diagrams.
The final lick is once again using the Mixolydian pentatonic scale, as well as the 'dips' idea that Ollie talked about in the 'Steve's Trick Bag' section. We have put it in this section so you have a stronger idea of how you can apply such a strange and cool lick!
