We kick off our Steve Lukather player study with an awesome Toto style solo! Ollie will take you through this solo based in the key of F major, including some cool ideas where we target specific chords with our soloing. This concept really helps expand your theory and improvising skills!
To kick things off we will simply listen to the solo! Believe us when we say that this part is half the battle... If you can hum it then you can play it! The solo is built using 4 licks that really capture Steve's playing style in Toto. There is a great mix of improvising in the key as well as targeting chordal tones as the chord progression moves through a few chords that are not necessarily in the key perfectly. So, watch the solo a few times and then we'll get started in the next lesson.
Our first lick is a relatively simple run through the F major scale, except it's all on one string and using a lot of cool slide tricks! The major scale is written out on one string in the fretboard diagram.
For our second lick, we will be using the F major pentatonic shape 1 alongside some pretty quick alternative picking. Remember to pay close attention to Ollie's tips and tricks about how to approach alternate picking when trying to build some serious speed! The scale F major pentatonic shape 1 is as shown in the fretboard diagrams.
For our third lick, we are kicking off in the F major full-scale shape 2 (as shown in the fretboard diagrams). As we get to the bend at the top of the scale, it's all about the technique to ensure you can keep the bend in the right place whilst adding your little finger.
For our last lick, we really push the boat out to perform a classic two-note per string style Lukather lick, whilst incorporating a Lydian idea as well as some beautiful legato lines to finish off. The Lydian mode is quite simply a major scale with a #4th note. This note really adds a cool vibe to the sound, but importantly must be used over the specific chord, which in this case is the Eb major chord. You can see the chord and scale together in the fretboard diagrams.
