It's time to bring the Rock! We want to bring everything that was great about Guns N' Roses era Slash to this epic Christmas classic! We only really need to focus on the lead part in this track, as there is plenty to learn there, although we will be going over the basic chords so that you have those too.
It's time to bring the Rock! We want to bring everything that was great about Guns N' Roses era Slash to this epic Christmas classic! We only really need to focus on the lead part in this track, as there is plenty to learn there, although we will be going over the basic chords so that you have those too. We'll start by showing you how we got that Slash hard rock tone!
The base of our tone is using a Marshall JCM 900 style preset in TONEX by IK Multimedia. This is definitely the style of amp you need for Slash, and it's worth noting that with an amp like this, you don't even need to push the gain past 12 o'clock, the amp gets there for you! In fact, that is literally all we needed for the sound. We did add a little bit of Reverb and delay via the "bus" in logic, which simply means we can bring a little in to add some extra colour, but not overwhelm or massively change the sound.
For both rhythm and lead we used a Les Paul style guitar, with two humbuckers. We used the bridge pick up for rhythm as it was not only extremely "fat" sounding, but also had a bit more clarity to it than the neck pickup. And, in true Slash style we used the neck humbucker for the lead!
For the lead guitar part, we playing in the key of D minor, and mainly sticking to a combination of the D minor scale and the D minor pentatonic. Our core positions for this track are in Box 4, 5 and 1. Make sure you are visualising these boxes when you are learning the solo. They can be found in the fretboard diagrams for reference.
It's also really worth outlining the main chord progression so that the tab makes a bit more sense as you are working through it.
