Have some fun jamming over this John Mayer trio style backing track in the key of A blues. The track consists of a cool bluesy riff that continues through the song, and your task is to use your improv skills to solo over the top. Try using your A minor and A major pentatonic scales combined for an authentic bluesy sound! Below, we'll have a more in-depth look at the kind of scales you can use to solo over the track.
Whenever we see the key referred to as 'blues', rather than major or minor, we are suggesting that the track is based in a blues format, which allows you to use both major and minor pentatonic scales over the top. In this instance, it is a great idea to use both, and we have drawn out the 5 pentatonic shapes in major and 5 pentatonic shapes in minor for you below.
Try to really push yourself and blend the two shapes in one position. For example, if you look at the fretboard below you will see the A Minor shape 1 overlayed with the A Major shape 2. You can see how the notes cross over and intertwine. This is how the best blues players combine the different sounds, so give it a try!
