Encore Bass Guitar Lessons: Lesson Four - 4th & 8th Notes

Free guitar lesson

Summary: 4th & 8th Notes

As a bass guitarist, rhythm is your best friend! This is where the instrument really differs from the guitar, as it is generally more of a rhythm than a lead instrument. Therefore, knowledge of basic note values is crucial.

Theory: Time Values

To try to explain how 4th and 8th notes work, it is easiest to use a visual piece of tab with the note values above it. Take a look at the picture below, and notice the difference between the two bars.

Even though the two bars of music last the exact same amount of time, using 4th notes you can fit 4 notes into one bar, and using 8th notes you can fit 8. This is because the 8th note is half the value of the 4th note. It's also important to note that we are using a 4/4 time signature, which literally means "four 4th notes equals one bar". It's very simple, but a knowledge of this is important.

Interactive Tab: Exercise

Use the interactive tab below to play along with Dan! Get the tab on loop and try testing out your new knowledge. You can even slow it down if you like. Good luck!
