This track is all based around a simple bluesy groove, some epic fuzz tones, and pentatonic blues riffing. Of course, when you have the kind of feel and style Gary Clark Jr has, you really don't need anything more!
The main chord is based around an Am7 chord, which Gary Clark Jr plays with his thumb and first finger. You then move to an A7sus4 which you hammer on, as Franco demonstrates in the video. The two chords are shown below as well as the D chord featured in the bridge.
The rhythm is relatively simple as it is is all downstrokes. The only tricky part is that you are alternating between the high part of the chord and the low part. Once you have that, it's all very easy! Here is that pattern:
For all the lead parts in this track, you are using your A Minor pentatonic. The first lead part starts in shape 5 and then moves into shape 1. As we play more lead we start moving across the neck a little more. We think this is a great chance to learn your 5 pentatonic shapes int he key of A minor... So here they are. Enjoy!
All done?
Congratulations
